Item Number
The Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 in .45-70 Government is a single shot hammerless falling block action rifle designed by Hugo Borchardt and manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Company. This example is marked J.P. Lower Denver Col on the receiver ring indicating it was once in Lower's inventory in Denver.

It was the last of the Sharps single-shot rifles and one of approximately 9,000 produced in military form from 1878 until 1881 when Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company shut down. It is chambered in government .45-70 caliber. It has a 32 inch round barrel with good rifling showing wear and some light pitting in the grooves as you would expect with a 140 plus year old rifle. The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable" in script and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN." behind the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN. USA". It is equipped with a dovetailed blade front sight, military ladder rear sight and a non functioning sliding trigger safety. This is the Military style stock rifle with two-barrel bands and checkered steel butt plate, the upper tang and buttstock did have a tang sight mounted at one time so there is one tapped hole on the tang and one in the wood (see photos). The metal is mostly plum brown with little of the original finish remaining, miscelaneus dings and dents commensurate with its age.
