Cimarron Firearms imported Uberti manufactured cowboy action shooting version of the 1851 Richards-Mason Cartridge Conversion - .38 Special (no + P ammo), In 1871, Colt employee Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt 1851 Navy percussion revolvers to a breech loading cartridge revolvers. In 1872 William Mason, another Colt employee, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the Richards model and the 1851 Richards-Mason Conversion revolver was born. As percussion parts ran short, the 1860 Richards-Mason barrel was changed from the earlier octagon percussion model profile to the round barreled sleek profile found on the 1871-2 Open Top.
