This single cavity cast bullet mould was designed for the 500 Smith & Wesson. Designed to be cast from wheel weight at approximately 700 degrees. The mold will nominally cast .502" in diameter on the driving bands and nominally .446" diameter on the nose. .960" over all length, .680" from the crimp groove to the nose and a .450" meplat. The crimp groove is deeper than standard for additional bullet hold.
The portion of this bullet that is seated into the case is only .300" long. To minimize or prevent bullet pull under recoil:
- Hornady gas checks should be annealed before applying to minimize or eliminate spring back. This will give the maximum amount of hold on the gas check shank and should prevent the bullet and gas check from becoming separated in the case during recoil.
- Sufficient case neck tension and a heavy crimp will be required, especially with heavy recoiling loads.
- Heat treated bullets must have the gas checks applied after the heat treatment. Otherwise the tight gas check may squeeze the gas check shank during heating and become loose on the shank.
